On 24 September, from 9.00 am to 10.00 am, MaQuEst, the Grand Est Quantum Hub, in partnership with Adira, the Alsace Development Agency, invites you to their webinar “Quantum: Understand to Innovate”.

With recent advances in the field of quantum technology, this area is rapidly emerging as a strategic issue of national importance, as well as a major focus for innovation and R&D within businesses. But what exactly do the terms ‘quantum computing’ and ‘hybrid computing’ encompass? What opportunities do they offer compared to traditional computing for businesses across different sectors? How does it relate to high-performance computing? Above all, what impact will it have on your business?

These questions will be addressed and answered during our webinar.

Financial support for hybrid innovation projects (HPC/Quantum): the MaQuEst call for proposals

Is your company looking to perform a diagnostic study to identify and explore quantum use cases, or to carry out a research and development project based on hybrid (HPC) or quantum computing? MaQuEst, the Grand Est Quantum Hub, is launching a call for projects to receive financial support from the Grand Est Region of up to €150,000.

Apply between 15 September and 16 November 2026.

 

Two funding options

Option 1: Quantum Assessment

Support for projects aimed at identifying and exploring use cases utilising high-performance computing (HPC) and/or quantum computing. Maximum grant: €15,000, corresponding to up to 50 per cent of eligible expenditure (excluding VAT), depending on the size of the company.

 

Option 2: Quantum R&D and Innovation Projects

Support for exploratory projects developing innovative use cases based on hybrid (HPC) or quantum computing, applied to a defined industrial challenge and demonstrating a high degree of innovation. Maximum grant: €150,000, corresponding to between 25% and 45% of eligible expenditure (excluding VAT), depending on the size of the company.

 

Priority topics

Several topics have been identified as priorities under this call for projects:

  1. industrial and logistical optimisation,
  2. quantum chemistry and materials,
  3. health and pharmacology,
  4. energy and the green transition,
  5. cybersecurity and post-quantum cryptography,
  6. artificial intelligence,
  7. hybrid computing.

 

How can you benefit from this support?

You are eligible if your company meets the following conditions:

  1. Provide evidence of outsourcing R&D activities within the Grand Est region
  2. Sufficient equity and a significant amount of paid-up share capital
  3. Use an external service or enter into a collaboration agreement with a member of the MaQuEst consortium, or with any other public or private organisation with proven expertise in quantum or hybrid computing
  4. The project must have been selected under the calls for proposals for innovation in high-performance computing (HPC) and quantum computing organised by MaQuEst, with a letter of recommendation from the scientific evaluation committee issued by MaQuEst

 

Your project must also relate to:

  1. high-performance computing aimed at solving problems arising from quantum computing (in particular through simulation on HPC infrastructure), or utilising hybrid HPC/quantum approaches,
  2. or a project focused on quantum computing that will have a medium-term impact on the company’s development (competitiveness, market positioning, expertise).

BTQ acquires QPerfect: a clear sign of the Grand Est region’s excellence in quantum R&D

The French government has just approved the takeover of QPerfect by the Canadian company BTQ Technologies (Nasdaq: BTQ). This marks another success for the Grand Est region’s quantum ecosystem and further demonstrates the region’s potential for innovation and research and development (R&D).

 

An acquisition that confirms the influence of quantum science in the Grand Est region

Founded in 2023 within the European Centre for Quantum Sciences (CESQ) in Strasbourg, QPerfect is an academic spin-off led by researchers from the University of Strasbourg and the CNRS – Guido Pupillo, Shannon Whitlock, Johannes Schachenmayer and Guido Masella – alongside Philippe Blot, who comes from the industrial sector. In three years, the 2023 Grand Prix i-Lab winner has gone from the laboratory to being acquired by an international company listed on the Nasdaq: a trajectory that clearly illustrates the Grand Est region’s ability to transform fundamental research into disruptive innovation and economic value.

This kind of journey – from academic research to entrepreneurship, right through to an international acquisition – is precisely what MaQuEst is committed to supporting within its regional ecosystem: researchers, deep-tech start-ups, manufacturers and investors united by a single goal – to make the Grand Est region a leading centre for quantum technology in France and Europe.

 

QPerfect’s R&D expertise: a strategic use case for quantum computing in France and Europe

QPerfect has established itself as a key player in quantum emulation, with three flagship technologies developed in Strasbourg:

  • MIMIQ: a high-performance quantum emulator, a benchmark in the sector, which enables the design, testing and validation of quantum algorithms in a software environment prior to their deployment on physical hardware.
  • Digital Twin: a digital twin solution enabling the simulation and optimisation of quantum architectures prior to their physical implementation.
  • Quantum Logical Unit (QLU): a multi-layer control framework designed for large-scale, error-tolerant quantum systems.


By integrating these technological building blocks, BTQ aims to strengthen its ability to secure infrastructure and communications against the threats posed by quantum computers, notably through post-quantum cryptography. A strong signal: the Canadian acquirer has chosen to base part of its European R&D in Strasbourg, alongside the CESQ’s academic programmes, thereby recognising the density and quality of the regional research ecosystem.

This acquisition confirms the Grand Est’s position as a region possessing all the ingredients needed to foster the emergence of international leaders in quantum technology: cutting-edge academic research, business incubation schemes, public funding, and a base of deep-tech start-ups directly linked to global industrial needs.

Europe is investing in the people who will build the quantum future

The European Quantum Academy (EQA) has launched to help prepare the workforce Europe will need to lead in a quantum sector expected to surpass €155 billion globally by 2040.

As Jacob Sherson, EQA Coordinator, explains:

“Europe's quantum sovereignty will not be secured in a handful of elite labs.
It will be secured by connecting the full pipeline — from the classroom to the cleanroom.”

Backed by €19.8 million in funding, the initiative brings together more than 70 partner institutions and over 100 affiliated organisations across Europe.

Here’s what the Academy will do:

  • Coordinate quantum education across the full learning pipeline — from schools and universities to professional upskilling and lifelong learning.
  • Connect talent, education and industry through six Regional Quantum Academies spanning Northern, Western, Southern, Eastern and Iberian Europe.
  • Help reduce gaps in access to quantum education and opportunities across the continent.

The quantum future needs people. Europe is starting to train them.
